They're not going to do very much that way. Your board seems to have the decoupling caps placed more or less at random - mostly in the upper left, away from U2 and U3. That is even noted on the Thomas Henry schematic. In particular, decoupling caps (C3-C6) need to go near the power pins of the ICs they serve. Placement is also important to the circuit for other reasons. One of my video streams is about component placement. Doing good placement comes down to putting components near each other that need to connect, in such a way that you can avoid many traces needing to cross each other. If you want to squeeze it, executiveBlaster is absolutely right saying "placement is key." That's true for both hand and automatic routing. For minimum board size, I think you have to go manual if you really want to auto-route, you'll pay for it with a larger board.

That's especially relevant if you're trying to keep the space consumption down - for a given circuit, an autorouter may simply require a bigger board than manual routing could achieve. Some auto-router solutions are terribly bad. Even a good auto-router will usually not produce as good a solution as a moderately careful human. Routing PCBs is the type of problem (from a computer science/math perspective) that humans are good at and computers are not. sometimes it will do crazy dumb stuff, so you need to watch for that, but overall works pretty well. If components are placed well, and power is routed, I'll often finish up with diptrace's autorouter. if you tell autorouter to route 5mil traces and 5mil spaces, but your DRC is checking for 8mil, it will bark at everything.

you'd generally make these traces a bit wider too, like 20mil or so.Ĭheck that your DRC setting are compatible with your routing settings. this way you can make sure that your power traces aren't doing anything particularly weird. the autorouter will happily use up your space on ground traces that may be unnecessary. You might try excluding ground from the routing, then use a copper pour and vias to make the connections. you need to set trace width and clearance to ~8mil for smaller designs, or 5mil if your pcb house can handle that. Settings for the autorouter make a difference. if you arrange the components thoughtfully, autorouter works great and can save you time. are you using surface mount or through hole? if through hole, I'd say that's a tad lofty.
